how to insert sprites into super mario kart

This seems to be 'the palce' to figure out where items are located when using Lunar compress and extracting content, I get that much. If you can help me with getting all the info I need or you can help answer what is wrong with my extracted sprites that would also rock. I must be wording things wrong because I keep coming to resources that are more or less for other mario kart games or only show how to edit what I have thus far and repeat what I don't quite get I (i guess). Google has the answers and this much i am sure of, but try as I may and might.
